Show Parents List

This list shows the parent(s) of the selected hierarchy node. There might be more than one parent; that means that the node is shared.

If there is only one parent, that doesn't necessarily mean that the node appears in only one place in the hierarchy. The node might be "shared" through one of its ancestors. That is, one of the node's ancestors might have multiple parents. And if an ancestor appears in two hierarchy locations, that means all its descendants also appear in two locations.

For example, an Element might have only one parent—a certain Task. But that Task might have multiple parents. Thus, the Element would appear in multiple hierarchy locations (wherever the Task appears) even though the Element itself has only one parent.

Go to Parent Button

Click this button to go to the hierarchy location of the selected parent.

Unlink from Parent Button

Click this button to unlink the node (the child) from the highlighted parent(s) in the list. The child is the node you selected in the hierarchy prior to executing the "Show Parents" command.

Example

Suppose that you are reorganizing an analysis hierarchy, and you decide that a certain Task needs to be temporarily removed from the hierarchy, pending further disposition. Suppose that this Task is shared in five different locations in the hierarchy (it has five parents).

You could go to each of the Task's five hierarchy locations and unlink the Task five times. After the last unlink, the Task would be sent to the Recycle Bin, from which it can be retrieved later when you have decided where it belongs.

But it would be easier to go to just one of the Task's locations—any of the five—and do the Show Parents menu operation. Then highlight all five parents in the Show Parents list and click the Unlink button, thereby removing the Task from all its hierarchy locations (which will send it to the Recycle Bin) in one stroke.
