An instructional objective is a precise description of what a learner will be capable of doing after successfully completing a given unit of instruction. Think of objectives as the "targets" of your training program. Good instructional objectives allow everyone - the learners, course developers, instructors and managers - to focus their efforts on an explicit set of learning outcomes.
You can see how important it is that your objectives represent the right outcomes. Not only that, they must be stated in such a way that everyone will reach the same understanding as to what the intended outcomes are supposed to be. In fact, coming up with good objectives is one of the most important things that you, as the instructional designer, will do.
