There may be times when you decide to break a training unit into subunits. For example, you might decide a training unit has too many objectives for one unit. To subdivide a training unit, follow these steps:
1.Expand the Program hierarchy to reveal the training unit of interest. Highlight the training unit in the hierarchy and click the Insert Sibling Below button.
2.The properties window will appear for the new sibling. Enter the new title and click OK.

Your new program should already be marked as a training unit. If it is not, simply check the Training unit radio button pictured above. This is important because only training units can hold objectives.
3.Below the hierarchy in the Objectives Linked to Program window, highlight the objectives that you want to relocate to the new training unit. You can Ctrl-click or Shift-click on objectives to highlight more than one. Drag the highlighted objectives to the new training unit.
4.A Confirm Drop box will appear. Select MOVE to move the highlighted objectives from your original program training unit into the new one, and then click OK.

If you wish to publish the objective content for the Learning Station, be sure to go to the General page and change the "Development Status" to Completed-Active. The program will not be eligible for viewing in the VLS until it is active.
Tips for Breaking a Training Unit into Subunits
Using the Holding Bin
If the objectives to be relocated into the new training unit come from more than one program, then it may be easier for you to first find all those objectives and move them to the holding bin. Proceed as follows:
When using the Holding Bin, keep in mind that it may contain other objectives as well, from prior uses of the bin. You may wish to clear the holding bin of old entries before adding any new entries to it. Step 4, below, describes how to open the Holding Bin.
1.Visit each training unit that will donate objectives to the new training unit. For each one, after you select it, go to the Objectives Linked to Program window. This in normally located below the hierarchy. 2.In that window, select the objectives to move to the new unit. Then right-click on any of those selected and from the popup menu choose Unlink and move to holding bin.
If you prefer to unlink the objectives one at a time, or if there is only one objective to unlink from the selected training unit, then right-click on an objective and choose the unlink-to-holding-bin action. 3.Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each donor training unit. When finished, the holding bin will then contain all of the objectives that you wish to sequence, in one place. 4.Now open the holding bin. To do that, right-click in the Objectives Linked to Program window and select View holding bin from the popup menu. You can now drag and drop the objectives from the holding bin to sequence them into the new training unit. |
Moving Objectives from one Training Unit to Another
Let's say you have a training unit in the program structure and there are objectives sequenced into the unit. Suppose you want to move them to another unit of instruction. What's the best way?
To move objectives from one unit of instruction to another:
1.Be sure a Program Hierarchy is displayed. 2.Make a new unit of instruction. Be sure to check the "Is this a training unit?" box on the Training Info tab. 3.Highlight the training unit in the program that contains the objectives you want to move. Note the sequenced objectives displayed in the links window, below the hierarchy display. 4.In the links window, highlight all of the sequenced objectives that you want to move. 5.Drag the objectives from the Links window area and drop them on the new unit of instruction. A prompt will display: "Move sequenced objective(s) into program?" Click the OK button. |
How to 'Unsequence' Objectives from a Training Unit
To unsequence objectives from a training unit:
1.Be sure a Program Hierarchy is displayed. 2.Highlight the training unit containing the objectives you want to unsequence. Note the sequenced objectives displayed in the "Objectives Linked to Program" links window, below the hierarchy. 3.In the links window, click on an objective(s) you want to unsequence. Right-click on it and select Unlink on the right-click menu. A prompt will display "Unsequence the selected objectives from the selected program?" Click the OK button. The objectives will be detached, or unlinked, from the unit. They will still exist in the Objective Hierarchy. 4.As an option, you can choose "Unlink and Move to holding bin" on the right-click menu. A prompt will display "Unlink items and move to holding bin?" Click the OK button. This will cause the unlinked objectives to be displayed on the screen in a Holding Bin window. You can hold them there until you are ready to put them somewhere else. |
