VISION User Guide

Standards define the criteria that will be used to measure whether or not the learner has mastered the objectives completely.  There are two broad categories of standards:

1.Those designed to measure the process or methods applied to doing the action

2.Those designed to measure the product, or quality of the result

For example:

"Fill the 50 gallon gasoline tank following all safety measures specified in procedure 22-5J."  (This is an example of a process oriented standard).

"Produce a Final Analysis Report that addresses every point in the scenario and contains no factual errors."  (This is an example of a product oriented standard)

Tip Note that standards are not always necessary.  Sometimes they are "understood," and do not have to be explicitly stated in the objective.  For example: "Name the three colors in the American flag" needs no further clarification as to the standards for success.  They are obvious in the behavior statement.

Example of Process oriented standards:

In accordance with all safe practice guidelines

In accordance with procedure RP-7906

With no wasted effort or wrong key presses

At a minimum of 40 words a minute

In five minutes or less

In the most efficient manner possible

Example of Product oriented standards:

Without any misspelled words

With clean fittings and no spillage

To within three decimal places

Not to exceed a bend ratio of 18 degrees

Within +/- five percent

Without error

So that the pump starts on the first try
